GENERAL RULES

Please do not SPAM. SPAM means stupid, pointless, annoying message - I don't think I need to go into detail as to why these are unwanted.

Showing aggression towards other members is not only unkind but unnecessary. If you wish to have a "nasty" character, make sure others are aware that it is just your character - maybe put a small note in your signature. And don't take your nastiness too far.

Obviously certain people are better spellers than others. I would like to point out that there is a "Spell Check" button that you can use when posting. It is encouraged that you make use of this button to ensure that others can understand what you are saying. It just makes life easier for everyone, yourselves included.

Try to remember that there may be younger members than yourself at The Wizarding World. Therefore please try to refrain from the use of bad language and posting any inappropriate material or links to websites that contain inappropriate material is strictly prohibited.

As this is primarily a role-playing forum, users should take care not to role-play on behalf of other members. It is up to each user to control their character and no one else’s. You may mention another characters reaction (e.g. a facial expression) but should not role-play their movements or speech without permission.

If you are going away (in the real world) and know that you will be unable to post for some time, please send me a quick PM before you go. This way I will know that you are only temporarily inactive and will not delete your account.

As this is a Harry Potter forum, please bear in mind that although there is nothing wrong with getting ideas from various other stories/films/games/books etc. you should not directly use material from them. For example, it seems extremely unlikely that Obi Wan Kenobi attended Hogwarts as a child along with the long lost sister of Darth Vader.

And finally, please try to remain reasonably active - disappearing mid-conversation spoils it for those reading the RPs as well as the one with whom you were conversing. Please understand that we don't expect you to be able to get online every day. Professors try to keep their lessons in fairly slow motion so that members don't get left behind should they not be online for a few days. HOWEVER, inactive accounts will be deleted at the end of every other term.

NOTE: The administrator is able to ban any deserving member at any time should they be found violating these rules.

 Being a Hogwarts' Student...

BEING A HOGWARTS’ STUDENT…

Once sorted, you are officially a pupil of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. This means that you must abide by school rules to avoid losing house points or receiving detention. The school rules are:

Lessons must be attended regularly. Students who do not attend lessons may find themselves held back a year the following term. All subjects are compulsory to first and second years. Once you have reached your third year, only Transfiguration, Potions and Defence Against the Dark Arts will remain compulsory although students can also sign up for as many other subjects as they choose.

All pupils must treat each other and members of staff with respect.

The Forbidden Forest is OUT OF BOUNDS to ALL pupils!
(Please understand that this is on a RP basis. You may post in the Forbidden Forest board, but if you are discovered by a member of staff, you must accept the consequences )

House points will be awarded for good behaviour and deducted for bad behaviour. See HERE for full details of how to earn/lose house points.

If you wish to start any clubs or hold a specific event in The Wizarding World then you must first consult the Headmistress and get her approval.

Regarding Grades

The school works on the following marking system:

O - outstanding
E - exceeds expectation
A - acceptable
P - poor
D - dreadful
T - troll

Professors will award these grades for pieces of class work and homework. Each grade is accompanied by a reward of house points as well - please see the House Point thread for details.

Regarding terms and year groups

A "term" is basically one school year i.e. September to July.

At the end of each term, you will move up a year group i.e. 1st years will become 2nd years etc.

This will not count for:
1. Any students who sign up after May as they will then have only been here for a couple of months.
2. Any students who have been almost entirely inactive over the term.
3. Any students who have not been to the compulsory lessons.

Regarding Prefects

In your fifth year at Hogwarts, you will have the opportunity to become a Prefect for the duration of the term. Prefects will be chosen by the Hogwarts’ Staff, following the submission of an application, and will be given a small amount of moderating powers as well as additional responsibilities.

Regarding Graduates

Once you have completed your seventh year at Hogwarts, you will graduate.

You will then be given the opportunity to stay on as a member of staff at Hogwarts (be it Professor, Caretaker, Nurse or Gamekeeper) or you may choose to enter the Ministry of Magic or St. Mungo's. Please note that you will still have to undergo the normal practice of applying for a staff position – you will not simply be given the job because you were a student.

Should you not wish to become a staff member, you may choose to create a new account and go through Hogwarts as a student all over again.

 Becoming a Member of Staff

BECOMING A MEMBER OF STAFF…

If you are interested in becoming a member of staff, please see below for positions currently available along with their job descriptions. To apply for a vacancy, fill in the application form provided and send it me via PM [username:admin]. You may also voice any queries by PMing me.

Vacancies:

Flying - Flying Lessons will, for obvious reasons, be mainly role-play. You do, however, need to have some knowledge of flying technique, broomsticks etc.

Charms - Charms will also be mainly a role-playing subject but the teacher needs to know about various charms and their affects.

Muggle Studies - This subject will probably require the least amount of research as it basically just informs students of very simple muggle objects.

History of Magic – This lesson will be almost entirely made up of theory work, candidates should have a good knowledge in the history of magic.

Caretaker - You will primarily need to moderate all threads in every board inside the castle i.e. checking for SPAM and any inappropriate posts. Of course it would also be nice for you to carry out the general grumpiness associated with the Hogwarts’ caretaker. Ideally, you will adapt the name of Argus Filch.

Gamekeeper - Must be willing to take the name Rubeus Hagrid as already a huge personality within the castle. You will be in charge of moderating posts in the grounds and out of school as well as accepting students into your home for the occasional chat.

Shopkeepers - Take your pick. There are plenty of shopkeepers needed for Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade. The wand-maker at Ollivanders will have to resume the name of Ollivander. Other than that, you can pick your own names and paint your own characters. It will basically just involve role-playing with customers, chatting and keeping a record of money spent and by whom which will have to PM’d to me so I can deduct the coins from the appropriate account.
_______________________________________________

Although there are positions mentioned above which are presently taken by existing members of staff, you may also apply for these teaching positions as they are not the current staff's primary subject. Similarly, if there is a position not mentioned above, and that you know is not already taken, feel free to ask whether it could be made available for you – there’s no harm in asking.

In order to become a member of staff, you must first understand that you will have to be a fairly active member, in particular if you are applying to be a Professor. There is no point applying if you only intend to come online once a month. It is understood that some people do not have continuous access to the Internet but you have to really be able to post at least once a week.

Step By Step Instructions for New Members
« Reply #5 on Jul 7, 2007, 5:38pm »

STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS FOR NEW MEMBERS

You can introduce yourself and get to know current members in the Introductions board. See HERE. If you are a little unsure about how things work, you will be able to find out more by talking to those who are a bit more experienced.

Before arriving at Hogwarts, new students need to purchase their school supplies from Diagon Alley. This part is not compulsory, although you only really get the chance once so it's nice to enjoy the experience. One thing which you must purchase from Diagon Alley is a wand, which can be obtained from Ollivanders'. You will need to buy a wand so that you can include it in your character biography - more on that later.

On arriving at Hogwarts, the next step is to get sorted into one of the four houses - Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw or Slytherin? Which will you be placed in? You can find out HERE, in the Sorting Ceremony.

Once sorted, either myself or your Head of House will send you a PM (private message) containing details of how to find your common room and the password you need to gain entrance. You must be patient and understand that unless the relevant members of staff is online, you may have to wait before this information is sent to you.

You must then complete your character biography, using the template provided. This it to enable others to learn about your background and understand the type of person you are. Members of Staff must also complete these.

Now you are ready to start roleplaying. If you have any queries, feel free to PM myself or another member of staff.

 Role-playing Help

ROLE-PLAYING HELP
For the more inexperienced role-player...

All speech should be written within speech marks. Otherwise how are we expected to know whether you are saying things out loud, to yourself, or just thinking them? Some people like to put their thoughts in italics, just to differentiate - but that's really up to you.

Nothing should be written "out of character" in a RP thread whether in OOC brackets [ ((OOC:.......)) ] or not. There is a special OOC board for anything you wish to say out of character or you could just use the PM function if what you wish to say is aimed just at one person.

All posts should contain some sort of thoughts and feelings and be more than just a line or two. This prevents your post from bordering as SPAM and will make it a lot more interesting and enjoyable for those who read it.

Using text language is strictly forbidden. Not only is it extremely annoying when used during role-play but also makes it difficult for people to understand what you're saying. Role-playing is all about being creative and writing well, so why write something like: jst wlkd in2 rm, u k? ?? Proper English must be used at all times. This includes spelling things correctly. If the entire word is mixed up then no-one will know what on earth you are trying to say. Using the spell checking facility at the bottom of the "Reply" box can aid you in this area.

When it comes to roleplaying in lessons, please remember: you may be wizards but you're not all Einsteins! Get things right by all means (maybe not every time) but please bare in mind that you are students. You don't know the most complicated spells in the world.

As previously mentioned in the General Rules, this is primarily a roleplaying forum, therefore users should take care not to roleplay on behalf of other members. It is up to each user to control their character and no-one elses. You may mention another characters reaction (e.g. a facial expression) but should not roleplay their movements or speech.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS

If you are not interested in becoming a Professor (through creating a seperate account) but would still like to earn yourself some extra Sickles - you might fancy getting yourself a part time job in Hogsmeade.

There are plenty of shops looking for eager students to help out at the weekends. Further information on enquiry (username:admin).

Duties mainly to include serving customers and stocking shelves but will vary from shop to shop.
